Justin: Welcome to MPA’s Tech Table, I’m Justin.

Diana: And, I’m Diana.

Justin: And, we’re you’re hosts. We’ll be serving up a heaping spoonful of all things tech.

Diana: We promise it’ll be easy to digest.

Justin: It is Wednesday Diana.

Diana: We’ll hi Justin. It is Wednesday, web Wednesday.

Justin: That’s right, Web Wednesday and today we’re going to do some Gmail tips.

Diana: Oh, I love Gmail.

Justin: We all love GMail most of the time. We do, you know we all started out on Hotmail probably.

Diana: I did, well I had prodigy for a while.

Justin: Oh yeah, you were even, you were like tech savvy when you were like six

Diana: Right, my parents, we had computers right from the get go.

Justin: Right, I would have started, and we probably had an email address through an internet provider.

Diana: Right.

Justin: You know, but I had hotmail. I remember Hotmail, Hotmail, Hotmail. Very exciting stuff.

Diana: I still have my Hotmail.

Justin: Ya, I do not have mine anymore. I think I got rid of that. I know I don’t use anything but Gmail so.

Diana: Gmail’s good.

Justin: Yes, so today we have two very simple tips for G-mail so you can keep the clutter out of your inbox.

Diana: Awe, that’s very good advice.

Justin: Right, and these tips work if you are using a regular @gmail.com address or if you’re using a G-mail apps address with your own domain.like AskDiana@askMpa.com.

Diana: Right, okay that’s good because a lot of people are using Google apps these days, especially for businesses.

Justin: Right, I have my Justin@JustinHillMusic.

Diana: Yes.

Justin: Absolutely, things like that.

Diana: But even if like Justin said you have just a regular old JaneDoe@gmail.com this will work as well.

Justin: Absolutely so what is our tip here.

Diana: Okay so lets say your email is JaneDoe@gmail.com. Google will also send email to that email address if you use Jane dot Doe at gmail.com or J-dot-A-dot-N-dot-E dot so on and so forth. Basically you can insert a period anywhere in the first part of your email address and still get Email at your original Email address.

Justin: Well, that’s interesting.

Diana: Yeah, and why does that matter, we’ll get to that in a moment after we talk about the other way to customize your email address.

Justin: Oh right and that is using the plus sign and then add a word. Such as JaneDoe@gmail.com can also become JaneDoe+spam@gmail.com

Diana: Right

Justin: Right, now my head is spinning.

Diana: I know.

Justin: Why does any of this matter?

Diana: Why does this matter, so okay how many times have you had to give your Email address just to view something on your website.

Justin: That’s true, you do have to give your, you have to enter your Email address. You get signed up for some list.

Diana: Exactly, you know that’s going to start sending emails your way which is fine I mean businesses are collecting your stuff so they can contact you but it can be a pain so this tip. Adding the dot or the plus spam or whatever. That will let you create unique email addresses for the website as you go through the signup process then in your G-mail itself create a filter to automatically delete all your future e-mails going to that particular E-mail address.

Justin: Oh so interesting, so when you’re signing up for a store. I mean if you’re doing something at a store website you don’t ever want to get Email from them.

Diana: Give em the Jane.doe@gmail.com

Justin: Maybe a store is a bad example. Maybe like an organization or something.

Diana: Something where you don’t really want to give them that update but you have to give them that email up front.

Justin: We’ll that’s very cool so you can add dots and pluses and a word and spam is a good word. And it will automatically send it to those and you won’t have to deal with it.

Diana: Exactly.

Justin: Very good, great Gmail tip for web Wednesday until next time.

Diana: Take care.
