January 22, 2014
Justin: Welcome to MPA’s Tech Table. I’m Justin.
Diana: And I’m Diana.
Justin: And we’re your hosts. We’ll be serving up a heaping spoonful of all things tech.
Diana: We promise it’ll be easy to digest.
Justin: It’s Wednesday.
Diana: Happy Wednesday, Justin.
Justin: Happy Wednesday to you too, Diana. It is Web Wednesday.
Diana: Yes, we always talk about web related things on Wednesdays. I guess I shouldn’t say always but…
Justin: But most of the time.
Diana: Almost always.
Justin: We’re going to talk about what’s trending on the web.
Diana: Okay, what does that even mean? I’m sure some of our audience doesn’t necessarily know what’s trending. What does that mean?
Justin: Trending means these are things that everyone is talking about. It’s the hot thing which in social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, even Facebook now, you’re using hashtags. Those hashtags are the trending things. Otherwise it’s in the Google searches like the important news events and things like that that come right up. What’s trending on the web…
Diana: Yeah, so sometimes things that are trending are really big world news events or the hot things in popular culture.
Justin: Right, right, right, and holidays. Whoever is twerking at the moment.
Diana: Oh my.
Justin: Yeah, I know. Miley Cyrus. That was trending though.
Diana: It was trending.
Justin: Absolutely. Not any more thank goodness.
Diana: Thank goodness.
Justin: We’ve moved past that. All right. So, the things that are trending on the web this week: Superbowl 2014.
Diana: That makes sense. That makes sense.
Justin: Absolutely.
Diana: Let’s see, Martin Luther King, Jr. also which is appropriate for this week.
Justin: Yep. NFL’s Richard Sherman.
Diana: Ann Wilson, of Heart, evidently she had an off-key National Anthem.
Justin: That happens sometimes.
Diana: Have you watched it?
Justin: I haven’t.
Diana: Me neither and I love Ann Wilson and I love Heart so I kind of don’t want to watch it.
Justin: Yeah, I imagine it was just a hearing thing.
Diana: Yeah, usually it is. It’s an in-ear monitor.
Justin: You’ve done the National Anthem in huge arenas, like 20,000+ seat arenas.
Diana: You have to have that monitor working or else you don’t know what you’re doing.
Justin: You don’t know what you’re doing because the echoes and everything are so bad. So, when you hear someone doing an off-key performance of any kind, there’s a lot of sound issues that can go into that happening so don’t just think all of a sudden they don’t know what they’re doing.
Diana: Right, because obviously she’s a pretty good singer.
Justin: Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
Diana: Let’s see. What else here is on the list?
Justin: The Seattle Seahawks coach, Pete Carol.
Diana: Okay, yeah, and Roy Garber of Shipping Wars. Have you watched Shipping Wars before?
Justin: No.
Diana: No?
Justin: No.
Diana: You haven’t?
Justin: No.
Diana: It’s like where they ship stuff, like UPS.
Justin: That sounds exciting.
Diana: No, I’m kidding. It’s like one of those Storage Wars and things like that, man shows.
Justin: Okay, well, I don’t know that one. I don’t know.
Diana: Okay.
Justin: Of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Diana: Yeah.
Justin: He is trending.
Diana: I think he’s always trending in some way.
Justin: Probably so. Football.
Diana: There you go, more Superbowl related, I’m sure.
Justin: Macklemore. Who else?
Diana: I see Lolo Jones. Something about bobsledding.
Justin: Is she trying something new?
Diana: I guess she was appointed to a bobsledding team or something.
Justin: That’s interesting.
Diana: I know. I don’t know.
Justin: Think the running thing wasn’t working or something?
Diana: I’ll have to look more into that one.
Justin: Interesting.
Diana: Yep, yep.
Justin: I would like to get to the point where I was good enough at one sport that someone just wanted me on a team at all. Like the sport I took up by no accident is running so I don’t have a team to worry about. I’m banging them down.
Diana: So, here’s a simple way to find what’s trending if you want to be in the know. You can go to google.com/trends. A more difficult way to find them is just to stalk everyone on Twitter and Facebook and make notes of everything your friends are talking about.
Justin: Yep, yep, and that will be trending. Also, on Twitter, on the side it actually gives you a list of the hashtags that are most being used.
Diana: That’s true. You can see the hashtags.
Justin: Yeah, and so if you want to join in the conversation you use that hashtag and bam you’re in the middle of trends.
Diana: That’s right.
Justin: All right. Well, have fun talking trends. Until next time…
Diana: Take care.
