Me and the American flag
July 4, 2013
This week’s question:Dane writes: “Moire, what’s up with the American flag? I know what the 50 stars are, but what about the stripes and stuff?”
Moire’s answer: And what a timely question you’re asking Dane! The flag of the United States of America (or OLD GLORY, as I like to call it) is one of the most widely recognized symbols to represent this fine country we live in. As you pointed out, it has 50 stars, which represent the 50 states. What most people don’t know is that the 13 stripes represent the original thirteen British colonies that declared their independence from Great Britain, thus becoming the first states in the Union.
One more FAST FLAG FACT before I go light up my sparklers – The original 13-star version of the flag was adopted in 1777 with the current version adopted on July 4, 1960.
Have a great 4th of July! Be safe!
Fondest Regards,
MOIRÉ
