Q&A with David – App Development
April 4, 2014
We sat down with David recently to talk about some cool stuff happening in the field of Application Development.
First off, what IS an application? An application is anything that performs a function on a computer, phone, tablet, or any electronic device, really. Hopefully a USEFUL function, but it doesn’t have to be.
Who uses them? Pretty much everyone, from businesses (accounting, processes, day-to-day work flow) to anyone with a smart phone who has downloaded Angry Birds.
What is MPA doing with applications? We build them, both for our own use, as well as for our customers. Most recently, we’ve launched CCW for iPhone and computer, as well as a time-tracking app for Zendesk called TymeShift. We’ve also built an inventory tracking application for a local utility and a paper delivery routing application for our area’s largest regional print-advertiser. Current projects include a cemetery application for city government, and we continuously develop and improve upon our existing applications.
Are businesses using apps? Yes, but many businesses don’t know that they can save a great deal of time & money by automating tasks they used to have to do manually. More and more businesses are realizing this now, as costs have gone down significantly. Basically, if something is causing you pain in your job, we can develop an app to help!
You mention that costs have gone down. Is there an average cost to develop an app? In short, no. That can vary greatly, depending on what it needs to do. BUT, where it was previously only larger corporations who were able to do so, now it is quite reasonable for most businesses. The Return on Investment (ROI) is usually captured within 2 years or less.
What would you say to someone who’s got a great idea for an App, but not sure where to start? Give us a call, tell us about your idea, and we’ll help walk you through the process of refining the idea, soliciting funding/investors (if needed) and bringing that idea to life.
