December 26, 2013

Justin: Welcome to MPA’s Tech Table. I’m Justin.

Diana: And I’m Diana.

Justin: And we’re your hosts. We’ll be serving up a heaping spoonful of all things tech.

Diana: We promise: it’ll be easy to digest.

Justin: Hello, Diana.

Diana: Hi. It’s the day after Christmas.

Justin: The day after Christmas. I think I ate too much. Yeah. Way too much. Roll me out of the studio.

Diana: I got a lot of paper cuts from so much unwrapping. You were very good to me.

Justin: Oh, well, you know. You deserve it. You put up with me all year round. I hope Christmas was good for everyone out there in radio land as well. Well, it is Thursday. Theme Thursday here at the Tech Table. And we like to take the day after Christmas and just slow down a little bit. After all the build up, a little time with just our closest family can be a great thing. One way to slow down is to cozy up with popcorn, hot chocolate and a good movie.

Diana: Those are three of my favorite things.

Justin: Absolutely. And if you can convince me to watch a movie…I’m just not a movie guy.

Diana: Yeah. It’s a very rare occasion for Justin.

Justin: I get really wrapped up in movies so we watch a lot of kids’ movies so that I don’t get wrapped up in them. I was watching, actually you were gone. I was watching a romantic comedy the other night. I don’t know what it was. They all kind of run together but I got all wrapped up in it, started wondering about the meaning of life and how love was important and…I’m an artist at heart.

Diana: This sounds like an exaggeration, listeners, but it’s absolutely true.

Justin: It’s absolutely true. I am a sap and I get caught up in things. It’s my artistic personality. So we do have a list of holiday classics. These are movies that probably everyone should see. Some of these are iconic, in fact. Not the first one necessarily. How the Grinch Stole Christmas of 2000 starring Jim Carey.

Diana: Of course there’s’ the original version that we all know, the animated feature.

Justin: Which is brilliant.

Diana: Brilliant. Fantastic Dr. Seuss. Anything by Dr. Seuss.

Justin: Absolutely. Then we have the Santa Clause.

Diana: Clause being C-L-A-U-S-E.

Justin: Right. Starring Tim Allen. Remember that from ‘94?

Diana: Love it.

Justin: That was fun movie. It was a little disturbing at points though.

Diana: Well…

Justin: He’s mutating into Santa Claus, right, or something. It was kind of scary.

Diana: But it’s very funny and I think they have at least one, if not two, follow ups to that, too.

Justin: And then A Christmas Story from 1983.

Diana: Classic. I didn’t realize that was 1983.

Justin: Really? Is that the one with the lamp with the legs?

Diana: Yeah.

Justin: Actually a friend of mine was nominated for a Tony award for his Broadway adaption of that, the musical version.

Diana: No big deal.

Justin: No big deal. That’s what I get when I’m on Facebook. I go on Facebook thinking, ‘I have accomplished something. I have a radio show,’ and then I have a friend who just won an Emmy or a Tony or something like that. That’s life. So A Christmas Story. That’s a great story. And of course, White Christmas.

Diana: Beautiful.

Justin: 1954. Starring Bing Crosby. I would sing a little bit but we have to pay the rights so we’re not going to do that. And then National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation starring Chevy Chase. Which is just hilarious.

Diana: Oh, it’s hilarious. Hilarious. All those…

Justin: We watch it all the time.

Diana: All those Vacation movies are very funny. A little inappropriate at times, I suppose for…

Justin: I think they get less funny as the franchise went along.

Diana: I would agree with that. But the Christmas Vacation one’s pretty family-friendly and very funny too.

Justin: Then here are two classics you cannot go your lifetime without. You have to see these. Miracle on 34th Street from 1947 starring Natalie Wood and then It’s a Wonderful Life from 1946 starring James Stewart. Noelle, our engineer, that’s her favorite Christmas film.

Diana: She’s giddy right now.

Justin: She is. And it’s a beautiful movie. Those are just great. They have great messages to them. So kick back and watch a movie. Until next time.

Diana: Take care.
