September 12, 2013

Justin: Welcome to MPAs Tech table. I’m Justin.

Diana: And I’m Diana

Justin: And we’re your hosts. We’ll be serving up heaping spoonful of all things Tech.

Diana: We promise it’ll be easy to digest.

Justin: That shows how fast things are changing in the school system. You know now a days technology is everywhere in schools. They have online registration and many schools are just switching to that completely. Yeah, when I was a kid there was one computer in the classroom.

Diana: Right

Justin: And it was one of those big desktop machines that weighed.

Diana: A dinosaur.

Justin: Yeah 300 pounds and the only thing you could do on it was play Oregon Trail.

Diana: Oh Oregon Trail. And print shop did you ever do print shop?

Justin: No, that was too fancy.

Diana: We had the day we could go to the computer lab and we didn’t even have the computers in our classrooms but we could go to the computer lab once a week or once every two weeks, however they had the schedule set up and we could get print shop deluxe and make like a big banner because the pages would print out dot matrix connected.

Justin: Right all the paper was connected. Those were the days. Yeah I remember going to the library even and using the computers in the library and that was a big treat.

Diana: Right

Justin: That was before the world wide web even existed.

Diana: I know, I know so what can they do online, we have the online registration, what else?

Justin: Well you know now the parents/students access assignments, attendance. Grades online.

Diana: And monitor things.

Justin: Yeah exactly because for a few years now the teachers have been using online interfaces to enter grades and attendance so now there’s a lot of portals is what there called where parents and students can get access to the assignments, the attendance. The grades, you know a lot of teachers I know have their own web pages where they post things about their class.

Diana: You can get the school calendars, lunch menus. sports events.

Justin: Yeah Lunch menus, that’s very important. Yup, sports events, and you know virtually all schools have these web pages, it’s kind of an industry standard now to have all these things available online.

Diana: Well yeah and it’s really important to just get the information out there quickly like if they have a closing because it’s too hot or the snow or whatever they can just put that up there immediately.

Justin: Exactly, do they use social media. Are schools into that?

Diana: Yeah schools are, I don’t know if a lot here in the Tri-state area are but I do know that some schools have their pages.

Justin: Excellent, well you know. we’re interested in hearing your comments, we have dated ourselves by saying nothing was available pretty much when we were kids but we’re curious to know what you think about schools and the online resources that you have. So we’d like to here that, what’s that email address Diana?

Diana: Questions@MPA.com
