Justin: Welcome to MPA’s Tech table. I’m Justin.
Diana: And I’m Diana
Justin: And we’re your hosts. We’ll be serving up heaping spoonful of all things Tech.
Diana: We promise it’ll be easy to digest. Hello Justin
Justin: Hello Diana, it’s Tuesday at the Tech Table.
Diana: Tech Tuesday.
Justin: Tech Tuesday. So today we’re going to talk about this whole XP not supported business that’s going to happen after April. Is it April 8th.
Diana: I don’t know the exact date but I know it’s in April.
Justin: I think it’s April 8th. Ya so Microsoft is saying that they’ll and they won’t, they’re not just saying it.
Diana: Right.
Justin: They’re really not going to support your XP system anymore but that doesn’t mean it’s going to shut down or not going to work.
Diana: Right, it’ll still operate. They just won’t be supporting it..
Justin: Right, exactly so they’re not going to support the software which means it will leave your system potentially vulnerable so.
Diana: And a lot of people have XP still.
Justin: Yeah, it’s true what does that mean Diana for us. I mean they’re gonna not support it. What does that really mean.
Diana: So it will no longer be supported. I guess what it does not mean is that it won’t stop working. It’s going to continue working. It’s not gonna blow up mid use. [laugh] But what it means is Microsoft is no longer going to be creating software fixes for any of the actual software that the computer runs.
Justin: Right, so it could potentially mean that you are more vulnerable to malware because the anti-virus software will no longer be receiving updates.
Diana: Yes and we have talked very often about how malware and anti-virus software. Well malware is detrimental to your computer and then anti-virus software is very important to have it.
Justin: Right,
Diana: To combat that malware. So if you’re not receiving those updates then you could have some issues because of that.
Justin: Right, exactly so need to do those clean ups and scans more often on an XP system more often on an XP system after April 8th just to make sure that nothing is happening.
Diana: Right, now a lot of people are upset about this. I think because a lot of people have XP and so they’re blaming Microsoft for having to upgrade and saying you know Microsoft is wrong for ending this but really.
Justin: Oh, I know. It’s like complaining that the part for your 1982 dishwasher is hard to find. Well it’s ganna be people because and Microsoft in this case, and I don’t stick up for Microsoft very often but I’m ganna stick up for them here. They, they’re not wrong for ending this and it was first released in 2001.
Diana: That was a while ago.
Justin: Well it was, now to you and me, to me for sure 2001 doesn’t seem like it was that long ago but 2001 was in fact makes it thirteen year old program.
Diana: And in computer years that’s like thirty.
Justin: Yeah.
Diana: [Laugh] Easily.
Justin: Yeah, I mean there are kids that are like were there computers in 2001.
Diana: [Laugh] They weren’t even born yet.
Justin: Yeah, exactly. So yeah, they’ve actually created three more operating systems since then. They’re better for everyone to take on those new operating systems and use them because those are fully supported and that is moving you on to bigger and better things
Diana: Right, it’s really an opportunity to move forward. It’s a great opportunity to go out and look and see maybe it’s time to upgrade your system. Get a new computer.
Justin: Right, exactly. And yeah, and then that’s true. You need to visit your local computer retailer and something maybe newer and better.
Diana: Right, and in some instances you can get a newer operating system on your computer but frankly most cases you’re going to find it’s just better to upgrade the entire system.
Justin: And especially with something in the age of XP. That means you probably got the machine quite a few years ago and it just really. It’s time to upgrade. It’s just one of those facts of life and that’s the way technology is. Just like cars. Just like dishwashers.
Diana: It’s kind of the end of an era here.
Justin: Absolutely. So until next time.
Diana: Take care
