What is The Cloud?
March 9, 2017
When someone says “The Cloud”, they often include air quotes and rolling eyes. Why is this?
It’s not because they don’t really MEAN the cloud. It’s not because they’re quoting someone else. (Ok – maybe the eye rolling is because they’re thinking back to some annoyingly over zealous tech person attempting to talk over them.) But really, it’s likely because “The Cloud” is just not fully understood. Let’s fix that.
What does it do?
The Cloud works by taking data from physical servers and moving the data to another location owned by someone else. That someone else’s focus is to make sure the data is always up and running properly. That’s pretty handy.
Why move to the Cloud?
- Save money (Spend it on whatever makes your clock tick!)
- Allows you to scale up and down
- Flexibility
- Quicker (Like a rabbit!)
- Reliable (Like your favorite uncle)
- Secure (Like the KFC original recipe)
How is the Cloud secure and reliable?
It is the engineer’s main focus (at the cloud service provider) to keep it secure so that you don’t have to worry about it. This means you can focus on what’s important to you and your company.
What could be better than that?
